Georgian Justice Ministry denies any restrictions on Saakashvili's meetings with lawyers, visitors

TBILISI. Oct 28 (Interfax) – The Georgian Justice Ministry’s Special Penitentiary Service has denied the claims of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili that his meetings with lawyers and visitors at the prison in Rustavi have been limited.

The service explained that the full glazing of the window in the visitation room is connected with preventive measures aimed at ruling out Saakashvili getting infected with the novel coronavirus.

Lawyer Giorgi Gelkhauri told reporters on Thursday that the prison administration had fully glazed the window visitors use to speak with Saakashvili, and now everyone has to shout.

The service noted violations of the rules for visitation by Saakashvili and his lawyers. "Saakashvili refuses to wear a mask during his meetings with visitors. In some cases, Saakashvili and his lawyers exchange written documents through the unglazed part of the window in the visitation room," it said.

According to the service, Saakashvili has been visited 104 times at the Rustavi prison, including 57 times by lawyers.

Saakashvili, former Georgian president and currently a citizen of Ukraine, secretly arrived in Georgia from Ukraine on September 29. He was detained in Tbilisi on October 1 and is currently being held in a Rustavi prison.

Georgia earlier declared Saakashvili wanted as a person convicted in absentia in several criminal cases and treated as a suspect in some others. The Georgian authorities warned repeatedly that he would be detained immediately after he crossed the border. Saakashvili has described his detention as unlawful and the charges brought against him as falsified.
