Georgian authorities did not discuss Saakashvili's extradition with Ukraine
TBILISI. Oct 30 (Interfax) – The extradition to Ukraine of Ukrainian citizen and former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, detained in Georgia on October 1, has not been discussed, Georgian Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani said.
"I state with full responsibility that there have been no contacts with the Ukrainian side, no demands for Mikheil Saakashvili’s handover," Zalkaliani told journalists on Saturday.
The Ukrainian side has not made any requests for Saakashvili’s extradition, he said. "We have repeatedly explained that extradition is not possible in this situation, and there have been no such requests," Zalkaliani said.
A group of parliamentarians from the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine visited Saakashvili in jail on Friday and told journalists afterwards that Ukraine is seeking his return home and that talks are already ongoing at the diplomatic level.
The Georgian Foreign Ministry responded that there have been no and are no ongoing negotiations with Kyiv on Saakashvili’s extradition to Ukraine.
