Georgia launches production of NATO standard assault rifles
TBILISI. Oct 28 (Interfax) – The Georgian-Israeli enterprise Delta CAA has started producing NATO standard GI-4 5.56mm assault rifles in Georgia, the press service for the Georgian prime minister said on Thursday.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili familiarized himself with the production of automatic rifles at the Tbilisi-based Delta state military scientific and technical center on Thursday.
Absolutely all of the parts of the rifles will be produced on site using advanced technologies, and modern U.S. machines have been purchased for this purpose, Garibashvili was quoted as saying by his press service.
"We have already officially opened the enterprise today and will begin production of GI-4 type M4 rifles (American assault rifles). All parts of the assault rifles, including plastic parts, everything will be produced locally," Garibashvili said.
The Georgian defense forces will be equipped with these assault rifles, the press service said.
There are plans to expand production with other types of firearms in the future.
"It will be possible to work on modernization of different types of weapons at the enterprise. Also, production of export products is planned for the future," the press service said.
