Georgia joins evacuation of officers of int'l organizations, their families from Afghanistan

TBILISI. Aug 26 (Interfax) – Following consultations with partners, Georgia has joined the process of humanitarian evacuation of officers of international organizations and their families from Afghanistan, the Georgian government administration said on Thursday.

"NATO military transport planes have been deployed at the Tbilisi airport. They are performing daily flights to Kabul, from where officers of international organizations stationed in Afghanistan and their family members are evacuated to Tbilisi," the government said.

"Also, at the [Tbilisi] airport, the Norwegian Armed Forces opened a transit medical office that could be used in the evacuation of a Norwegian military hospital in Kabul if necessary," it said.

Up to 2,000 persons have been evacuated from Kabul to Tbilisi to date.

"Covid-19 safety regulations are enforced during the transportation and accommodation of passengers in Georgia," the government said.

The United States and its allies are evacuating civilians wishing to leave Afghanistan via the Kabul airport. The evacuation is due to end on August 31.
