Future of Europe being determined in Ukraine, our duty is to continue to support Ukrainians by all means – Nauseda
KYIV. Jan 17 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda has said that the future of Europe is determined in Ukraine and expects the supply of German Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.
“The end of this war will determine the future of Europe, so our common duty is to support Ukraine by all means – first of all military, but also political, economic, financial, humanitarian. Assistance to Ukraine should be sustainable, long-term and closely coordinated between the EU and NATO,” Nauseda said at a panel discussion In Defense of Europe in Davos on Tuesday
He noted that Lithuania is an example of how a small state can help Ukraine.
“In Lithuania, 99.9% of the population supports Ukraine,” he said.
At the same time, Nauseda expressed hope that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will still decide on the transfer of Leopard 2 to Ukraine. According to him, in the matter of sending tanks, someone should take the initiative and make a decision, followed by other countries.
Nauseda also stressed that “we must seek responsibility for the crimes of aggression of the Russian Federation and help restore Ukraine.”
He added that Russia’s war in Ukraine showed not only the strengths of Europe, but also those areas that “require close attention.”
According to the Lithuanian president, the threat from Russia will not disappear, regardless of the conditions and the end of the war.
Speaking about European security, Nauseda stressed that its cornerstone is and will remain the transatlantic defensive alliance – NATO.
“The North Atlantic Alliance has no alternative. The transatlantic link is irreplaceable and must be strengthened. The stronger each link of the Alliance is, the safer Europe and the entire Euro-Atlantic space will be,” he said.
