Future German Defense Minister considers it necessary to adapt Bundeswehr to new realities

KYIV. Jan 17 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The German Armed Forces must adapt to the new international realities, Boris Pistorius, who will take up the post of German Defense Minister on Thursday, said on Tuesday.

"The German army needs to adapt to the new realities provoked by the events in Ukraine," the EFE news agency quoted Pistorius as saying.

For his part, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Pistorius is an experienced politician who will give the Ministry of Defense "the strength and calmness necessary in our time."

On Monday, German Defense Minister Christina Lambrecht notified Scholz of her desire to leave the post. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung noted that Lambrecht’s work as defense minister had been criticized for several months, including due to slow purchases of equipment for the Bundeswehr and lack of experience.

Pistorius was born in 1960. From 2006 to 2013 he was the mayor of Osnabrück, since 2013 he has been the head of the Interior Ministry of Lower Saxony. He is a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany.
