Final text of bill on SBI reform still requires consultations – Korniyenko
KYIV. Dec 8 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The final version of the text of the bill No. 3196-d on amendments to the law On the Security Service of Ukraine on improving the organizational and legal framework of the SBI requires discussion with human rights defenders, First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Oleksandr Korniyenko said.
"Several committees have a question regarding this bill. It is clear that if there are questions, then there may be no votes. We will always have time to bring it to the hall and fail, but there is no such task. Regarding the final version of the text, I think it requires more consultations, in particular, on my initiative there will be consultations with human rights activists who have their own comments," Korniyenko said at a briefing on Wednesday.
"These are definitely not K-department workers, not SBI officers. These are people who have been working in this area for decades – the Ukrainian Helsinki Union, the Center for Civil Liberties […] For sure, nobody hinders the reform of the SBI. But sometimes it takes some time to work out the law – then it goes better and faster," Korniyenko said at a briefing on Wednesday.
As reported, the Verkhovna Rada adopted draft law No. 3196-d on amendments to the law on the SBI on January 28 as a basis. On September 22, the Verkhovna Rada’s Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence approved Bill No. 3196-d on improving the organizational and legal framework for the SBI.
