Film Cenzorka co-produced by Ukraine, Slovakia and Czech Republic wins award at Venice Film Festival

KYIV. Sept 13 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The film Cenzorka by Slovak film director Peter Kerekes, co-produced by Ukraine, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, has won the prize at the Venice Film Festival, the State Film Agency of Ukraine reported.

The film received the Best Screenplay Award in the Orizzonti section of the 78th Venice Film Festival, the agency’s press service said on Facebook on Saturday evening.

"The movie tells the story of a young woman Lesya, who was sentenced to imprisonment in one of the correctional facilities in Odesa. She just gave birth to her first child, and found herself in a world inhabited only by women: prisoners, nurses and wardresses, women of different ages, wives and widows, daughters, sisters, pregnant women and women with children. If it were not for the color of the uniform, sometimes it would be difficult to say who is who," the message says.

It is noted that the film is the debut full-length feature film by Kerekes, a laureate of festivals in Berlin, Leipzig and Toronto. The Ukrainian producer of the film is Denys Ivanov (Arthouse Traffic company). The movie was created with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine.

The 78th Venice International Film Festival took place from September 1 to September 11.
