Fight against 'anti-people' regime in Georgia needs to continue – Saakashvili
TBILISI. Oct 4 (Interfax) – The fight against the "anti-people" regime needs to continue, former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said in a letter he wrote to Georgian citizens from prison after his detention in Tbilisi on October 1.
The letter was read to journalists by Saakashvili’s lawyer Dmitry Sadzaglishvili on Monday.
"The days of the anti-people regime are numbered. I am proud of you," Saakashvili said.
Lawyers will do "everything possible to release him [Saakashvili] from prison," Sadzaglishvili also said. He did not talk about the details of the ex-president’s defense.
A different lawyer, Beka Basilaya, told reporters that Saakashvili looks cheerful despite his hunger strike.
Lawyers for Saakashvili say all accusations made by the Georgian justice system against him are politically motivated.
Opposition supporters plan to hold a largescale rally in support of the ex-president near the prison in Rustavi in the next few hours. According to Georgian opposition television channels, the police are already mobilizing extra forces to defend the prison.
