FAO to provide up to 30,000 tonnes of winter wheat seeds to farmers in war-affected regions of Ukraine

KYIV. Aug 26 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), with the financial support of the Government of Japan, will provide two tonnes of winter wheat seeds for 1,500 farmers each from seven regions of Ukraine, who cultivate plots with a total area of no more than 50 hectares.

According to a press release from the organization, the support is aimed at ensuring the successful holding of the new sowing season by agricultural producers from the regions affected by the aggression of the Russian Federation: Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhia, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Sumy and Kharkiv regions.

At the same time, each of the 1,500 selected recipients of the allowance will receive two tonnes of winter wheat seeds in containers of 50 kg. Preference will be given to farmers with documented damage caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Farmers will have to pick up seeds themselves from distribution points established by FAO in each of the seven regions.

According to the press release, to receive assistance from FAO, it is necessary to register by September 4 through the Google form https://bit.ly/3CwJSzU and confirm the registration in the Public Agrarian Register https://www.dar.gov.ua/.

Farmers will be selected according to the following criteria: the applicant shall be registered in accordance with the legislation of Ukraine, cultivate 20-50 hectares of land and carry out economic activities for at least one year.

According to the organization, enterprises that grow and independently process agricultural crops will not be able to apply for assistance; as well as enterprises from agricultural holdings; farmers already receiving assistance or other grants from FAO; enterprises receiving similar assistance under other state or regional support programs.

In addition, newly created legal entities, as well as agricultural enterprises with legal or tax debts, cannot count on assistance.

As reported, in May, FAO distributed 862 tonnes of seed potatoes among Ukrainian households from ten regions of the country affected by the Russian invasion, which will allow them to grow over 10,000 tonnes of potatoes. Assistance was received by 17,700 households, or approximately 46,000 people.
