Expert believes Klitschko's popularity may be chance for Ukraine-EU relations alignment
KYIV. Aug 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Political expert Valentyn Hladkykh believes that the popularity of Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko in Germany may become a chance for leveling relations between Ukraine and the European Union.
"It seems that [Head of the Christian Democratic Union party Armin] Laschet has serious chances of success, so whether we like him or not, Ukraine will have to deal with him. And here Klitschko’s popularity may become a chance for Ukraine to align relations with Germany, in particular, and the European Union as a whole," Hladkykh said.
He said that in this case it does not matter whether the Ukrainians like Laschet’s candidacy or not, since Ukraine will have to build relations with any person for whom the citizens of Germany will vote.
"Surely, Vitali Klitschko has a powerful background in Germany, where he is a famous and respected person. Honestly, sometimes it is thanks to Klitschko that Germans know about Ukraine and are interested in Ukrainian events. Given this, it may be good if Vitali Klitschko can convert his recognition and influence in Germany to advance Ukrainian interests," Hladkykh said.
