Ex-Georgian President Saakashvili's defense team seeks disqualification of court

TBILISI. Nov 10 (Interfax) – Lawyer Beka Basilaya is petitioning for the recusal of the composition of the court, which decided to consider the case of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili without his presence in the courtroom.

"The defense team files a motion for the disqualification of the composition of the court due to the inability to bring Mikheil Saakashvili to the trial. This court has no moral right to continue the trial without the defendant," Basilaya said.

The lawyer emphasized that the defense team is demanding the court deliver the defendant to the courtroom, otherwise "the trial cannot be fair," adding that Saakashvili will not be able to physically appear in court in a week because of his ongoing hunger strike.

The court decided that Saakashvili’s trial could take place without his presence because of the former president’s health condition and because of possible complications due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Saakashvili’s lawyer Shota Tutberidze organized the live broadcast from the courtroom.
