Ex-dpty commander of Berkut unit Marchenko served with charges of high treason – PGO

KYIV. Nov 8 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Investigators of the State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) served the former deputy commander of the Berkut unit with charges of high treason, the press service of the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) said.

"During the pretrial investigation, it was established that the suspect, being a citizen of Ukraine and an employee of a law enforcement agency, from March to September 2014, while on the territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, decided to assist the aggressor country and its representatives in carrying out subversive activities against Ukraine. To this end, he took the oath of allegiance as an employee of the so-called ‘special unit of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, the Berkut special police detachment’ (since April 2016, the Berkut special police detachment of the Main Directorate of the Federal Service of the National Guard of Russia in the Republic Crimea and Sevastopol," the PGO said.

The PGO does not provide the name of the suspect, however, as it became known to Interfax-Ukraine, it is about the deputy commander, chief of staff of Berkut of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea Serhiy Marchenko.

It is noted that the suspect has already been on the wanted list since 2016 on suspicion of abuse of power and official powers, accompanied by violence committed on December 11, 2013 in order to counteract peaceful protests in Kyiv.
