European, Ukrainian officials discuss Russian annexation of Crimea, city of Sevastopol

KYIV. Dec 2 (Interfax) – The European External Action Service (EEAS) reported on Thursday about the ninth meeting of high-ranking officials of the EU and Ukraine, held in Brussels yesterday, to discuss the "illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol" by Russia.

"The EU and Ukraine exchanged views on the impact of the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol, including subsequent restrictive measures imposed by the EU in response to this violation of international law, and welcomed the ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders," the EEAS communiqué says.

The Ukrainian side informed the European partners about the activities of the International Crimea Platform and subsequent events following the bilateral summit held in Kyiv on August 23.

"The EU reaffirmed its support to the implementation of the Joint Declaration signed at the Summit. The severe deterioration of the human rights situation in the peninsula was underlined, with international organizations and human rights defenders still denied access," the document reads.

It also reports that both sides exchanged views "on the security situation and the growing militarization of the peninsula by the Russian Federation."

The EEAS confirmed the EU’s commitment "to fully implement its non-recognition policy" on the annexation of the Crimea Peninsula to Russia.

The meeting was held at the level of senior officials from the European External Action Service and the European Commission and representatives of the Ukrainian administration.
