European Commission's meeting with Ukraine's govt in Kyiv agreed with local authorities – EC
KYIV. Jan 27 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The joint meeting of the European Commission (EC) and the government of Ukraine, scheduled for February 2 in Kyiv, is being organized with the support of the Ukrainian authorities, EC Spokesperson Eric Mamer said.
At a briefing in Brussels on Friday, answering a question about the risk associated with holding such an event in the Ukrainian capital, Mamer said this is about event organized with the full support of the Ukrainian government, otherwise, such a trip would not have been envisaged.
According to him, this meeting is a very strong symbol of solidarity of the European Commission, in particular, and the European Union as a whole with Ukraine in these difficult times for its existence.
The spokesperson said such a meeting could not take place if there was not full agreement with the Ukrainian authorities, and this is exactly the case. He said it is clear that in organizing this meeting, security assessments play a key role and that the dialogue between the European Commission and the Ukrainian government on this occasion was extremely intense and, of course, based on the analysis carried out by the Ukrainian authorities in terms of security and their ability to provide guarantees, security measures adequate to the very heavy responsibility, I will clarify this, which generally falls on them, according to Mamer.
He was asked an additional question about the coordination of the EC with the European Council in view of the EU-Ukraine summit on February 3, in which Head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen should also take part.
The EC spokesperson said there are two different events: a meeting between the commission and the government of Ukraine, and an EU-Ukraine summit. He said it is up to the European Council, together with the Ukrainian authorities, to decide on the details related to the organization, decisions of an operational nature, which concerns the summit.
On Friday, the European Commission officially announced a trip to Kyiv of part of the European Commissioners, headed by the President of the European Commission. It is expected that Executive Vice-President of the EC for Economy Valdis Dombrovskis; EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell; Vice-President of the EC Margaritis Schinas; EC members Virginijus Sinkevičius (environment, oceans, fisheries); Janusz Wojciechowski (agriculture); Ylva Johansson (domestic affairs); Nicolas Schmitt (employment and social rights); Paolo Gentiloni (economics) and Janez Lenarčič (crisis management).
