European Commission receives complaint from Shakhtar Donetsk against FIFA
BRUSSELS. March 31 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The European Commission has received a complaint from the Donetsk football club Shakhtar against the International Football Federation (FIFA) for the decision to allow foreign players to suspend contracts with Ukrainian clubs until the summer of 2023 due to the war, in connection with which the club suffered financial damage in the amount of $43.6 million, thus Shakhtar demands compensation.
We have received a complaint, which we will consider based on our standard procedures, the European Commission told Interfax-Ukraine on Friday.
The European Commission did not provide further comments. We have no further comments, the European Commission stated.
Earlier, the media reported that the European Commission is not the first instance to which Shakhtar applies with this demand. The first lawsuit against the federation was filed last summer with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, but it was dismissed in January of this year. The lawsuit alleged that because of the emergency rules adopted by FIFA, the transfer of four foreign players of Shakhtar for EUR 50 million was disrupted.
