European Commission ready to provide Rada with expert assistance in adapting Ukrainian legislation to EU standards – MP Kondratiuk
KYIV. Oct 11 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The European Commission is ready to provide the Verkhovna Rada with expert support and assistance in adapting legislation to EU requirements and standards, Deputy Chairperson of the Ukrainian Parliament Olena Kondratiuk said after a meeting with Georg Ziegler, Deputy Head of the Support Group for Ukraine in the European Commission on Tuesday in Brussels.
According to the press service of the apparatus of the Verkhovna Rada, the parties discussed the implementation by Ukraine, as a candidate for EU membership, of the seven main recommendations of the European Commission and the process of adapting Ukrainian legislation to European directives and standards.
"The Verkhovna Rada approaches these tasks responsibly and systematically. Together with the government, we are planning to adopt a large package of European integration laws by the end of the year. This will pave the way for the start of direct negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU," Kondratiuk said.
She also said that in each committee of the Ukrainian parliament, subcommittees have been set up to adapt Ukrainian legislation to the provisions of EU law.
"Their [committees’] activities are designed to improve the quality of lawmaking in this direction," the deputy chairperson added.
The participants of the meeting also substantively discussed the bill on media being prepared for the second reading.
"Compliance of this bill with the EU directive on audiovisual services is one of the main recommendations for Ukraine to acquire the status of a candidate country. We are waiting for the conclusions of the European Commission on this bill," Kondratiuk said.
In turn, Ziegler said that the European Commission is ready to provide the Verkhovna Rada with all the necessary expert support and assistance so that Ukraine quickly but efficiently goes through the process of adapting legislation to European standards and fulfills the seven recommendations of the European Commission.
As reported, Kondratiuk is on a working visit to Brussels.
