EU head congratulates Ukraine, Ukrainians on 31st anniversary of country's Independence

KYIV. Aug 24 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, Ambassador Matti Maasikas, congratulated Ukraine and Ukrainians on the 31st anniversary of the country’s Independence.

“Dear Ukrainian friends! Ukraine’s 31st Independence Day is like no other day. It is a day of celebration. We celebrate your resilience through half a year of Russia’s atrocious full-scale invasion and eight years of aggression. But it is also like every day now, a day of sorrow, sorrow for those who have fallen, for those who were injured, became victims of Russian atrocities …” Maasikas said in a video congratulation on Twitter.

Maasikas also noted that this is the first anniversary of Independence in the conditions when Ukraine became a candidate for membership of the European Union.

“Europe celebrates with you and Europe grieves with you. And we remain by your side,” he noted.

Maasikas said that the European Union stands together with the Ukrainian state, supporting and providing vital services to citizens and reforms that will help join the European Union.

At the same time, he noted that the EU supports war-affected citizens by providing emergency assistance and the opportunity to live and work "as normal as possible" in Ukraine and in the European Union.

The head of the EU also stressed that the European Union will continue to support Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression during the restoration and on the way to Europe.

Because we are one family. We share the same values and we want to live in democracy and prosperity, not in the darkness of totalitarianism. Together we are Europe!” Maasikas said.
