EU focused on how to prevent possible Russia's encroachment on Ukrainian territory, sanctions to be discussed only if this happens – Stano
BRUSSELS. Dec 9 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The European Union is focused on how to prevent a possible Russian encroachment on Ukrainian territory, and if only this happens the EU will decide on possible sanctions.
This was announced in Brussels on Thursday by representative of the European External Action Service (EEAS) Peter Stano.
He explained that all their efforts at the moment are focused on preventing the possibility of this from happening – they do not want to see Russia take this kind of action against Ukraine. He said they are focused on preventing any action, preventing encroachment on the territorial integrity of Ukraine. But if this happens, then they will discuss in detail what specific measures could be taken, he explained the current situation.
At the same time, Stano did not discuss what exactly the sanctions might be that could be used by the European Union in the event of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
He stressed that this is part of an ongoing discussion, and member states will assess the situation at the Council on Foreign Affairs meeting on Monday.
