EU backs its member states' plans on supplies of tanks to Ukraine – Borrell's spokesperson
KYIV. Jan 18 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The European Union welcomes the statements by a number of its member states about their plans to supply tanks to Ukraine, Spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell, Nabila Massrali has said.
The EU is positive about its member states’ desire to support Ukraine and supply it with tanks, she said at a press briefing in Brussels on Wednesday.
When asked by reporters how these deliveries would be financed – at the expense of the member states or they would be covered by the European Peace Fund, Massrali clarified that the European Peace Fund is designed for assistance to member states in their arms supplies to Ukraine. To date, such military assistance has been provided at the expense of this fund in the amount of EUR 3.1 billion. In general, military equipment and weapons worth up to EUR 11.5 billion have been delivered to Ukraine at the expense of the fund and member states.
Massrali also said that for that moment she could not announce whether the supply of tanks will be paid through the European Peace Fund or from the national budgets of member states, as long as discussions on this issue are confidential.
