Estonian PM advises some domestic enterprises to halt operations

TALLINN. Sept 7 (Interfax) – The Estonian government will not be able to provide substantial support to the country’s business because of the high energy prices and advises a number of domestic enterprises to suspend their operations, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said.

"I do not back the idea of securing a loan to support entrepreneurs. The state is unable to pay subsidies to entrepreneurs on a scale that will have an effect on them," Kallas told Estonian television on Wednesday.

"If we have some very large companies that possibly do not employ a large staff, then, like in other countries, it would be reasonable for some enterprises to close for a certain period of time for the sake of other companies," she said.

"The question now is how we can get through this winter and ensure that our enterprises do not go bankrupt and our people do not freeze in their homes," the prime minister said.

The government favors gas and electricity consumption cuts and is discussing the possibility of imposing a tax on windfall profits from gas sales, Kallas said.
