Estonia not to grant visa to Russian diplomat in response to expulsion of its diplomat from Russia – Estonian Foreign Ministry
TALLINN. Aug 30 (Interfax) – Estonia will not issue a visa to a Russian diplomat in response to the expulsion of one of its diplomats from Russia.
"Today, August 30, the Estonian Foreign Ministry decided not to issue a visa to a Russian diplomat in response to the expulsion of our diplomat from Russia," the press service for the Estonian Foreign Ministry said.
In diplomacy, it is common practice to respond in a tit-for-tat manner to the expulsion of a diplomat, the press service said. "In this case, the Foreign Ministry wants to put an end to the current situation and hopes that the Russian Federation will refrain from furthering the situation, despite its asymmetric response. Estonia is interested in good and constructive relations with all its neighbors, but this requires similar will from Russia," it said.
In early July of this year, Russia expelled Consul of the Estonian Consulate General in St. Petersburg Mart Latte from the country. Estonia retaliated by declaring a Russian diplomat persona non grata, which was followed by Russia’s decision to expel another diplomat who was serving at the Estonian embassy in Moscow in early August.
In turn, the Russian Foreign Ministry suggested to Estonian partners that they "stop and not complicate even further a situation that they have already heightened to the limit." "Otherwise, there will be a new decisive response from the Russian Foreign Ministry. In this case, all responsibility for a deterioration of bilateral relations will fall entirely on the Estonian side," the Foreign Ministry said.
