Energoatom intends to build Rivne NPP unit 5 using Westinghouse technology by 2032
KYIV. Aug 17 (Interfax-Ukraine) – National Nuclear Generating Company Energoatom intends to build and put into operation power unit five of Rivne nuclear power plant (NPP) using the AP1000 technology of U.S. Westinghouse by 2032.
"The 1,100 MW unit will be built using Westinghouse’s new AP1000 technology. Its commissioning should take place in 2032," Energoatom said on its Telegram channel late Tuesday evening.
During a visit to Rivne NPP on Tuesday, the company’s president, Petro Kotin, and, the director of Atomprojectengineering, Mykola Bozhko, presented the project and the construction schedule for the new power unit, the site for which was selected back in 2004.
According to the report, a number of pre-project works have already been completed, in particular, an analysis of the existing and prospective use of water resources in the area where the nuclear power plant is located, an analysis of the existing infrastructure of the plant and interconnections in the western region of the Ukrainian power system. The company said that pre-project work was also carried out to determine the restrictive geological conditions for the selection of a power unit.
As reported, in September 2021, Energoatom and Westinghouse signed a memorandum on the construction of five nuclear power units in Ukraine. Early June 2022, the companies signed agreements to increase the number of nuclear power units to be built using AP 1000 technology in Ukraine from five to nine units, and to establish the Westinghouse Engineering and Technology Center in the country.
In July this year, the companies signed a contract to develop an updated feasibility study for the construction of two AP1000 units at Khmelnytsky NPP in Ukraine.
