Eighty Melitopol residents remain in Russian captivity – mayor

KYIV. Aug 25 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Around 80 civilian residents of Melitopol, Zaporizhia region, currently remain in Russian captivity, according to the mayor of the city, Ivan Fedorov.

"According to the latest updates, currently there are around 80 people in captivity. Some of them dig trenches in forced labor camps, the Rushists force them to do this. Some of them undergo tortures in detention facilities. There are at least three of them [detention facilities] in the territory of Melitopol. And some of them have been convoyed to Simferopol and Moscow," he told a press briefing in Kyiv on Thursday.

The mayor also said that there are no filtration camps in the territory of Melitopol, but there is one on the administrative border between Kherson region and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.

"They undergo filtration there: people may sit behind bars for eight to ten hours while they are being questioned and their document are being checked. The Rushists have also promised to build the same filtration camp in Vasylivka," Fedorov said.

He also said that around 60,000-70,000 civilians stay in Melitopol. At the beginning of 2021, the population of the city was 150,000 people.
