ECHR to make public decision on Jan on admissibility of ‘Ukraine, Netherlands v. Russia’ case
KYIV. Jan 9 (Interfax-Ukraine) – On January 25, the European Court of Human Rights will announce a decision on the admissibility of the case "Ukraine and the Netherlands v. Russia" regarding the seizure of the eastern part of Ukraine in 2014, Commissioner for the European Court of Human Rights Margaryta Sokorenko has said.
"We are opening (by tradition) the new year in the ECHR … with a decision on the admissibility of the interstate case ‘Ukraine and the Netherlands v. Russia.’ On January 25, 2023, the ECHR will publicly announce a decision on the so-called Donbas case – the first case of the seizure of eastern Ukraine in 2014, when Russia launched a war against Ukraine from Crimea and Donbas," Sokorenko wrote on Facebook on Monday.
She recalled that the legal front of opposing the aggressor in the international arena opened in 2014. This case ‘Ukraine and the Netherlands v. Russia’ concerns the administrative practice of human rights violations by the Russian Federation in the temporarily occupied territory of Donetsk and Luhansk regions since 2014, including the destruction of the Malaysian Boeing flight MH-17 in 2014 over the temporarily occupied territory of Donetsk region.
Sokorenko is confident that the decision will be positive for Ukraine and the ECHR will proceed to the consideration of the case in essence, as it was in the interstate case "Ukraine v. Russia (regarding Crimea)" in January 2021.
