EC head promises to toughen EU's anti-Russian sanctions in case of threat to Ukraine from Russia

BRUSSELS. Dec 7 (Interfax) – The European Union will toughen existing sanctions against the Russian Federation and will adopt new ones if Russia threatens Ukraine in a military way, President of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen has said.

"The EU will respond appropriately to any further aggressions, including breaches of international law or any other malicious actions, taken against us or our neighbors, including Ukraine," said the head of the EC on Tuesday speaking at a conference of the EU ambassadors.

"This response will take the form of robust scaling-up and expansion of existing sanctions regimes. And on top of that we are ready to take additional restrictive measures," said von der Leyen, without specifying what kind of new sanctions she was talking about.

She assured in the "EU’s full and unwavering support for Ukraine in the face of this aggression against its territorial integrity and sovereignty," which she linked with Russian "military movements and their massive build-up along Ukraine’s eastern border."

According to her, "Russia’s aggressive actions continue to destabilize security in Europe."
