EAEU gas market estimated at over 20 bcm per year

MOSCOW. Sept 28 (Interfax) – The total gas market of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is estimated at more than 20 billion cubic meters per year, the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) said in a statement following a high level meeting on Monday on the preparation of the agreement to establish a common gas market for the union.

The meeting was attended by EEC chairman Mikhail Myasnikovich, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Mger Grigoryan, Belarusian Ambassador to Russia Vladimir Semashko, who also holds the power of a deputy minister, Kyrgyz First Deputy Prime Minister Aziz Aaliyev and Kazakh First Deputy Energy Minister Murat Zhurebekov.

The meeting was arranged within the context of preparations for a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council that is scheduled to be held in Minsk on October 14.

Officials at the meeting discussed issues concerning the setting of rates for gas transport services within the EAEU, and transportation and supplies of gas from third countries to members of the union on a non-discriminatory basis, the EEC said.

The also considered the advisability of forming a council of the heads of energy agencies of EAEU countries.

EAEU countries have approved a concept and program to establish a common gas market. Russia has sent the EEC a draft treaty on the common gas market and the document has been forwarded to other EAEU members. The countries are expected to approve it in 2022.

The common EAEU gas market is supposed to go into effect on January 1, 2025.
