Dialogue between Biden, Putin is chance to restore peace on continent – Boiko

KYIV. Dec 9 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The dialogue launched by U.S. President Joseph Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin is a chance to restore peace on the continent, but it is bad that Ukraine is not a subject in discussions about Ukraine, co-chairman of the Opposition Platform – For Life party Yuriy Boiko said.

"The dialogue that the presidents of the United States and the Russian Federation began is a chance for Europe and Ukraine to settle contradictions and restore peace on the continent. The bad thing is that in discussions around Ukraine, our government is not a subject. Ukrainian diplomacy has not coped with its task. Therefore, we are only informed about positions, about results," the Opposition Platform – For Life website quoted him as saying on Wednesday.

Boiko said that Ukraine is most interested in a political settlement of the conflict in Donbas, but the authorities have taken a passive position, although all the tools, platforms and a roadmap for negotiations existed and remain.

"At the same time, many legislative initiatives of the authorities only increase tension and alienate the population of temporarily uncontrolled territories – these are discriminatory language laws, laws on indigenous peoples, bills on the transition period and others," Boiko said.

The co-chairman of the faction believes that Ukraine should practically show its desire for peace.

"There are the Minsk agreements, which everyone recognizes as the basis for a peaceful settlement. Compliance with the political part of these agreements requires the adoption of laws, and no one except Ukraine can fulfill this. This is our responsibility. Enact the amnesty law. Develop and agree within the framework of the TCG [trilateral contact group to settle the situation in Donbas], laws on the specifics of elections in temporarily uncontrolled territories, on the peculiarities of local self-government, constitutional provisions on the status of Donbas," the MP said.
