Demand for commercial piglets recovering for first time since war start – association
KYIV. May 3 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The shock in the Ukrainian market of commercial piglets due to Russia’s military invasion was replaced by a rush increase in demand and prices for them, purchase prices for animals weighing 25-30 kg increased to UAH 75-85/kg, and piglets in the weight category of 9-12 kg cost UAH 130-180/kg, according to the website of the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders.
"So, according to operators in the central and western regions, many consignments are booked in advance, in four out of five cases there are no free volumes. In response to such a revival, the selling price of animals weighing 25-30 kg increased to UAH 75-85/kg, and piglets in the weight category of 9-12 kg cost UAH 130-180/kg," the organization said in a statement.
According to it, there are occasional higher prices for live piglets, and increased competition between pig breeders for commercial animals can contribute to a further increase in their value.
As reported, as of February 1, 2022, the total number of pigs in Ukraine amounted to 5.56 million, having decreased by 3.4% compared to the same date in 2021. Data for the following months were not published by the State Statistics Service due to the military invasion of Ukraine by the aggressor country, the Russian Federation.
