Defense Minister warns of criminal liability for assistance in crossing border to migrants from Belarus
KYIV. Nov 15 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Minister of Defense of Ukraine Oleksiy Reznikov has warned about criminal liability to people who are ready to help migrants cross the border with Ukraine for further transit to the EU countries for money.
"I would like to warn those businessmen who live in five regions bordering Belarus and plan to earn money on helping illegal migrants get inside the country – this will be against the national interests of the country. This is a matter of national security," he said during a briefing after an interdepartmental meeting in Lutsk.
In turn, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Oleksiy Danilov said that although an article for illegal border crossing has been decriminalized in Ukraine, the Criminal Code provides for liability for helping such persons.
Earlier it was reported that on Sunday in Lutsk, with the participation of the heads of foreign diplomatic missions in Ukraine, an offsite interagency meeting was held on behalf of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky to ensure national interests in the field of protecting the state border. The meeting was attended by heads of ministries and departments, law enforcement agencies and military formations, as well as heads of regional state administrations of the regions bordering on Belarus.
