Death toll from ammo depot explosions in Kazakhstan reaches 15
NUR-SULTAN. Aug 30 (Interfax) – Bomb disposal specialists have discovered another body at the site of the explosions at an ammunitions depot in the Zhambyl region of southern Kazakhstan, thus bringing the number of fatalities caused by the accident to 15, the Kazakh Emergency Situations Ministry said on Monday.
"Defense Ministry engineers have discovered the body of one more person, who has yet to be identified. The number of deaths caused by the explosions in the Zhambyl region has reached 15," the ministry said.
Earlier reports put the number of people killed by the blasts at 14.
The search for another missing person is continuing, it said.
A fire at an ammo depot of the Kazakh Defense Ministry’s engineering and sapper brigade in the Zhambyl region was reported on the evening of August 26. In all, there were about ten explosions of engineering munitions. The fire spread onto almost 700 square meters. The Emergency Situations Ministry said the depot was storing over 500 tonnes of TNT.
