Danube region's sustainable development via decarbonization, economic change to be Ukraine's priority during EUSDR presidency
KYIV. Nov 15 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Sustainable Development of Danube region through decarbonization and transformation of the economy will be a priority for Ukraine during its presidency of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR).
"During the year, work is planned in two directions. First – decarbonization and transformation of the economy. Second – the so-called development of human capital and labor markets," national coordinator of Ukraine at the EUSDR, Deputy Minister for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine on European Integration Ihor Korkhovy said at the presentation of the strategy in Kyiv on Monday.
According to him, attention will be focused on the Green Deal, the development of hydrogen energy, the transition to the low-carbon economy, digitalization, the introduction of the circular economy, reducing the ecological carbon footprint, work within thematic events on "green transport," the development of multimodal and intermodal transportation, and also TEN-T transportation.
Korkhovy pointed out that the direction of human capital development envisages post-COVID recovery, ensuring and adapting the quality of education to post-COVID recovery, increasing digital literacy, knowledge of foreign languages, introducing lifelong learning, increasing employment, improving the labor market and supporting social innovation.
The political priorities of Ukraine’s chairmanship are embedding the EUSDR priorities, increasing the EUSDR institutional capacity and strengthening the role of civil society in the implementation of the strategy.
"Embedding is an effective programming process that involves avoiding fund overlap, cross-use of funds, so that funds allocated for goals and projects are used as efficiently and accountable as possible […] We, as a country that will exercise the chairmanship, must also join this," Korkhovy explained.
Ukraine became the first non-EU country to chair the European Strategy for the Danube Region from November 1, 2021 to October 31, 2022.
