Current EU sanctions against Belarus aren't quite effective – Tikhanovskaya

BERLIN. Nov 23 (Interfax) – The sanctions imposed on Belarus by the European Union have not been quite effective, Belarusian opposition activist Svetlana Tikhanovskaya said on Monday.

There were numerous loopholes in the fourth package of sanctions, and it was not quite effective, Tikhanovskaya said at a press conference in Vienna.

She said she is hopeful that future restrictions will apply to companies and banks that are vital to the Belarusian authorities.

Pressure is the only way to make the Belarusian authorities agree to democratic transformation, Tikhanovskaya said. It is pointless to discuss anything with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, as he cannot be trusted or reformed, and life shows that pressure is the only method that works, she said.
