Crisis center created on basis of Energoatom to respond to possible emergency at Zaporizhia NPP

KYIV. Aug 18 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ministers of Energy and Internal Affairs of Ukraine Herman Haluschenko and Denys Monastyrsky, together with President of the state-owned enterprise Energoatom Petro Kotin, heads of Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhia regional administrations and the State Emergency Service inspected the work of all services, forces and means responsible for radio- and nuclear control.

As reported in the Telegram channel of Energoatom on Wednesday, this was prompted by the aggravation of the situation at the Zaporizhia NPP in Enerhodar (Zaporizhia region) captured by the Russians and the growing threat of a nuclear catastrophe due to the unprecedented nuclear terrorism of the Russian Federation.

Haluschenko announced the creation of a large crisis response center on the basis of Energoatom, which should be as effective as possible in the event of any emergency at the Zaporizhia NPP.

"A wide range of ministries, departments, institutions is involved in it, full coordination is underway there. It works 24/7, and we monitor the situation around Zaporizhia NPP online," the minister said.

Monastyrsky said that while the plant was under the control of Russian troops, there would be danger in the surrounding areas. According to him, all responsibility for what is happening at the plant for any unfolding scenario now lies with the Russian Federation, "and we must prepare for various scenarios that are possible in connection with this."

In turn, Kotin said that the situation at the Zaporizhia NPP remains dangerous and continues to deteriorate.

"In the past three weeks, there have been more and more attempts by Russian invaders to damage the plant’s equipment. To do this, they are shelling both the Zaporizhia NPP itself and the lines through which it connects to the integrated power system (IPS) of Ukraine. This is very dangerous!" he said.

"The Russians want to disconnect the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant from our power system, after which they will try to connect it to the Crimea. But when the nuclear power plant does not have a connection with the IPS, it will go into blackout mode," Kotin added.
