Creation of naval base in Berdyansk must be accelerated – defense minister
KYIV. Nov 15 (Interfax-Ukraine) – During a working visit to Berdyansk (Zaporizhia region) on Saturday, Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said that appropriate instructions would be given to accelerate the construction of the East Naval Forces base.
According to the press service of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Reznikov and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valeriy Zaluzhny got acquainted with the construction of the East naval base, hydraulic structures at the quay wall and the future barracks for servicemen of a separate marine battalion.
So, Reznikov said that after the occupation of Crimea and certain areas of Donbas and Luhansk region, Russia is trying to de facto occupy the Sea of Azov, and this has already created systemic threats to shipping.
"We constantly draw attention to this, because this is a dangerous precedent for the whole world. Strengthening our capabilities in this direction and the development of the Navy as a whole is one of the priorities. For this, not only state funds will be involved, it will be one of the tasks of military diplomacy to enhance interaction with partners. At the end of the trip, we will conduct a detailed analysis of the current situation. Appropriate instructions will be given to speed up the construction of a naval base in Berdyansk," the Minister of Defense said.
In turn, commander of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksiy Neizhpapa said that an area of 3.04 hectares would be transferred to the balance of the Ministry of Defense, where the base command, where the base command will be located, two divisions of ships, namely: a division of small armored artillery boats and patrol boats of the Mark VI type and a division of supply vessels.
In addition, Reznikov said that currently two American Island-class patrol boats are sailing to Ukraine.
"I would like to note that two Island boats are already performing tasks as part of the national fleet. It should note our cooperation with a strategic partner in the Black Sea, Turkey. Recently, the first unmanned complex Bayraktar entered service with the Navy. Today at the Turkish shipyard the construction of the hull of the main corvette of the ADA type for the needs of our fleet has begun. I believe that the anti-ship complex ‘Neptune’ is in service with the Ukrainian Navy today. On my own behalf, I will do everything that depends on me, so that in the near future this complex take up combat duty to protect the southern borders," Reznikov said.
