Cost of using Ukrzaliznytsia grain cars in Jan down by 32% compared to Dec
KYIV. Jan 18 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The average rate of payment for the use of wagons of JSC Ukrzaliznytsia for the transportation of grain cargo in January 2023 decreased by 32% compared to December last year – to UAH 2,960/day from UAH 4,390/day, thus rail transport becomes more competitive for the transportation of grain compared to road transport.
At the same time, at recent auctions in January, the cost of grain carriers has already decreased to UAH 2,800/day and tends to further decrease, deputy director of the Ukrzaliznytsia department of commercial work Valeriy Tkachev said on Facebook.
According to him, in November 2022, the rate for the use of wagons was UAH 3,620/day, in October – UAH 11,570/day, in September – UAH 5,440/day, in August – UAH 2,830/day.
Tkachev also noted that the approximate cost of transporting grain in railway wagons in export traffic (to land border crossings) at a distance of 655-710 km was $53.6/tonne for wagon and route shipments.
In turn, the cost of transporting grain in export traffic in the direction of seaports for a similar distance is $35.5/tonne for wagon shipments and $31.7/tonne for route shipments, while domestic transportation for wagon and route shipments costs $45.1/tonne.
Tkachev explained that the reduction in the wagon component of the tariff for the transportation of grain by rail significantly reduced the logistics costs of farmers for the transportation of grain.
"With the indicated cost of logistics, rail transport becomes more competitive compared to road transport," he explained.
