Consumers will see first positive results of energy generation resumption after Russian attacks no earlier than mid-Feb – expert

KYIV. Jan 19 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The first results of the energy system restoration after massive missile and drone attacks, the last of which took place on January 14 and led to significant damage to generation facilities, will become noticeable to consumers not earlier than in mid-February, Oleksandr Kharchenko, the director of the Energy Industry Research Center (EIR Center), said.

"The situation remains difficult. The last attack led to significant damage to the power units of the thermal power plant, transformer substations of Ukrenergo. Recovery continues, but in terms of generation, it cannot be very fast. We are talking about weeks. We will feel the first results of the restoration of these power units in mid-February- the second or the third week of the month," Kharchenko said.

According to him, in general, the shortage of electricity in the country due to damage to power facilities is more than 20%, and in some regions it exceeds this figure, as, for example, in Kyiv region, where the deficit is about 40%.

"The most difficult situation is in Kyiv, of course, the frontline areas. Kherson region, part of Kharkiv region is in a very difficult situation. It is also quite difficult in Odesa region. These are the most affected regions," the expert noted.

At the same time, Kharchenko drew attention to the fact that, for example, Kyiv region suffers not only from the general state of the energy system, but also from minor accidents in local networks.

"Power engineers often have to choose: to repair something big, which will power 10,000-30,000 consumers, or the brigade will spend the same time to restore power supply for several hundred people. Therefore, it is also difficult because of small-scale accidents," Kharchenko explained.

According to his forecast, the situation may improve dramatically in April, when a large amount of equipment necessary for the restoration of the energy system will be delivered to Ukraine.
