Construction of NPP in Kazakhstan may be completed in 2032 – expert
ASTANA. Sept 20 (Interfax) – The construction of a nuclear power plant (NPP) in Kazakhstan is expected to be completed in 2034-2035, but it is not ruled out that it may happen even earlier – in 2032, JSC Kazakhstan Nuclear Power Plants general director Timur Zhantikin said.
"If we make this decision and choose a supplier now, it will take ten years. The Energy Ministry is speaking about the first quarter of 2023, when a supplier will be selected. Various documents are being prepared. We are looking at 2034-2035. Of course, this timeline may narrow down to 2032," Zhantikin told the Novoye Vremya program aired on the Jibek Joly television channel.
As reported, the project to build an NPP in Kazakhstan is expected to be implemented involving an international pool of investors.
Kazakhstan plans to build an NPP near the Ulken village in the Almaty region, southeastern Kazakhstan. The construction could take up to ten years, with a power unit costing on average $5 billion, the Energy Ministry said. The country’s projected energy balance for the period to 2035 includes a 2.4 gigawatt NPP as one of the options.
Kazakhstan is looking at nuclear technology from leading global companies for building an NPP in its territory. It has already compiled a shortlist consisting of four suppliers which have time-tested high-power reactor technology and a record of reactor operation. They include Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, China’s CNNC, Electricite de France, and Rosatom.
The Russian State Corporation Rosatom has the world’s largest book of orders for the construction of NPPs. Its projects to build 35 power units in 12 countries are now at various stages of implementation, including the construction of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant in Turkey.
