Complete shutdown of ZNPP in war conditions not priority option for Ukraine – regulator

KYIV. Sept 8 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine does not consider a complete shutdown of all six nuclear power units of the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in the conditions of its occupation as a priority option, according to the website of the inspectorate.

"The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate is studying all possible options, but, of course, not all of them will be used. That is, a complete shutdown of the ZNPP power units in occupation, conditions of hostilities with the danger of actually losing power for the plant’s own needs is not a priority option, as the media interpret it," the inspectorate said.

The inspectorate called incorrect the information presented in a number of media outlets that Ukraine was allegedly considering the option of stopping all power units of the ZNPP.

As the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate said, such information appeared as a result of an incorrect media presentation of a position of the acting chairman of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate, Oleh Korikov, during his answer to a question from a briefing moderator at the Ukraine media center on September 7.

"The answer of acting chairman of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate Oleh Korikov to the question from the briefing moderator at the Ukraine media center should be understood as follows: the inspectorate is studying all possible options and configurations for operation of the ZNPP power units. Among many of them, there is one that provides for a complete shutdown of power units," it said.

However, these words should not be understood that a shutdown of all power units is a priority and a main scenario of actions that are possible in the near future, the inspectorate specified.

As reported, on September 5 at ZNPP, as a result of shelling by Russian invaders, the last power unit No. 6 was stopped, which provided for the plant’s own needs for electricity.
