Coal bought in USA thanks to agreement at highest level – Zelensky

KYIV. Nov 26 (Interfax-Ukraine) – President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has said that it was possible to ensure coal supplies from the United States thanks to his agreements at the highest level in this country, while he called on private generating companies to join forces in ensuring the passage of the heating season.

"This should be solidarity work. If it’s bad with this or that country and they officially cannot sell you some kind of coal, then a private structure should come, help and buy. If I agree at the highest level, I repeat, at the highest level from the United States, so that 11 ships of coal would sail here. Do you think that I said that you should give us, but don’t give DTEK? Nothing of this kind. I say ‘us.’ The heating season is in our country," Zelensky said at a press conference in Kyiv on Friday.

At the same time, he said that the responsibility for the purchase of coal, as well as for the passage of the heating season, lies with private companies to the same extent as with state-owned ones.

The head of state noted the difficulties in obtaining energy resources due to the blockade of supplies from the Russian Federation, and in this regard, the need to import electricity, in particular, from Belarus.

"It is difficult to obtain this coal. It was imported from Russia. And if we do not have enough electricity, we must import electricity. Well, why can’t we have imported it? And if there is not enough for a city, why can’t we have? And can we do? Coal from Russia "does not go, Nord Stream is being blocked there. So what should the state do?" the president said, explaining the situation.
