Carlsberg Russia Group subsidiary acquires 75% of Russia's Konix craft brewery

MOSCOW. Sept 23 (Interfax) – Hoppy Union, a subsidiary of Carlsberg Russia Group, has acquired 75% of Konix Brewery, Carlsberg said in a statement, according to which the deal was closed at the end of August.

According to the terms and conditions of the contract, the remaining 25% of the shares are to belong to the founder of Konix Brewery, Oleg Tatuev, who is to continue developing the brewery as the director, thereby retaining all powers as the director of the project, according to the statement.

"Our main task as the new co-owners of the brewery is to solidify the brand’s position in the Russian craft beer market," Igor Mayorkin, CEO of Hoppy Union, was quoted as saying the statement. Konix Brewery’s current team is to continue operations, and the company’s business model is to remain the same, Mayorkin added.

Hoppy Union, which is fully owned by Carlsberg, operates in the non-industrial beer segment, managing the Gorky Brewery in Nizhny Novgorod. Hoppy Union also owns 50% of the ARC Brue brand, BrewMoose, Novosibirsk brewery. Moreover, the company operates the Tank & Hopper chain of specialized beer shops.

Konix Brewery was founded in the city of Zarechny, near Penza, Russia, in 2002. Since 2008, the brewery has been producing experimental beer. The company currently produces over 40 types of beer, including Indian Pale Ale (IPA), Pilsner, Stout, non-alcoholic beer, and cider.

According to data in the SPARK-Interfax analytical system, Kronix Breveri LLC realized revenue of 245 million rubles in 2020, and its net loss was 567,000 rubles. In 2019, the company was profitable with net profit of 12.3 million rubles.

Hoppy Union LLC had revenue of 8.2 billion rubles and net profit of 871.1 million rubles in 2020.

Carlsberg Group’s principal business in Russia is the Baltika brewing company, whose brands include Baltika, Carlsberg, Tuborg, Holsten, Kronenbourg 1664, et al. Baltika is the second largest brewery in the Russian Federation. According to data in the SPARK-Interfax analytical system, Baltika Breweries had 2020 revenue totaling 75.8 billion rubles and a net profit of 8.2 billion rubles.
