British FCDO condemns holding of Russian elections in occupied Crimea
KYIV. Sept 20 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of Great Britain (FCDO) condemned the holding of elections to the State Duma of Russia in the occupied territories of Ukraine.
"We condemn the holding of these elections on Ukraine’s sovereign territory, and reiterate that the annexation of Crimea by Russia in March 2014 was illegal and illegitimate, and remains so to this day," the British Foreign Office said in a statement regarding the Russian parliamentary elections held on September 17-19.
The office also said in the statement the past elections represent "a serious step back for democratic freedoms in Russia.," and excessive restrictions were imposed on observers, including foreign ones. "The measures taken by the Russian authorities to marginalize civil society, silence independent media and exclude genuine opposition candidates from participating in the elections undermine political plurality and are at odds with the international commitments that Russia has signed up to," the British Foreign Office said.
