Borrell, Blinken discuss Russian troops build-up around Ukraine

BRUSSELS. Jan 10 (Interfax-Ukraine) – High Representative of the European Union for Foreign and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission Josep Borrell and Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken discussed Russia’s military build-up around Ukraine.

Borrell shared his assessment of the situation after his visit to Ukraine, including on the contact line, the European External Action Service (EEAS) said on Saturday.

“They reaffirmed the European Union and U.S. support to Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity and emphasized the need for Russia to de-escalate and fully implement the Minsk agreements,” the message reads. In addition, the parties expressed confidence that any further military aggression against Ukraine would have enormous consequences and entail a high cost.

Also, the U.S. Secretary of State and the EU High Representative discussed bilateral and multilateral diplomatic commitments following proposals submitted by the Russian Federation regarding Russia’s views on security mechanisms in Europe.

“They underlined the United States’ and the EU’s enduring partnership and shared commitments to Transatlantic security and to confronting common security challenges. They agreed that any discussion about European security will happen in coordination and with participation of the European Union,” the press release reads.

The parties agreed to maintain close contact in all these priority areas.
