Bill on competitive selection of Constitutional Court's judges is being examined by profile committee – Stefanchuk
KYIV. Aug 26 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The bill on the competitive selection of judges of the Constitutional Court is being examined by the relevant parliamentary committee and only after its decision can it be proposed for consideration in the plenary session hall, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk said.
"It is now being considered by the committee [on legal policy issues]: as soon as the committee decides on this bill, it will be immediately submitted to the hall. Its adoption is the first requirement of the European Commission to Ukraine [among the seven blocks of reforms, the implementation of which determined as a condition for maintaining the status of a candidate member of the European Union], and we, as parliament, are working on their implementation in order to open up the possibility of negotiations on Ukraine’s full membership in the EU," the chairman told Interfax-Ukraine on Friday.
He also said the Verkhovna Rada had already fulfilled one of the requirements of the European Commission: on August 15, the parliament elected two members of the High Council of Justice (HCJ). After that, in addition to the adoption of the law on the competitive selection of judges of the Constitutional Court, it will be necessary to work out and consider bills on strengthening control over Financial Action Task Force (FATF), on the media and on national communities.
