Belavia suspends transporting citizens of Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Afghanistan from Dubai

MINSK. Nov 15 (Interfax) – The Belavia air carrier has suspended the transportation of citizens of Iraq, Syria, Yemen, and Afghanistan departing from Dubai.

"In accordance with the decision adopted by the relevant authorities of the United Arab Emirates, from November 14, 2021 citizens of Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, and Syria will not be allowed to board flights heading from Dubai to Belarus. In this context, the Belavia airline is tightening control over document checks during passenger registration on flights taking off from Dubai," the Belarusian air carrier said on Monday.

Passengers subject to this measure are eligible for a full refund for their tickets at the place of purchase.

Belavia began operating regular flights from Minsk to Dubai in February of this year. The airline operated three such flights a week in summer, increasing their number to five flights per week in October.

According to the air carrier, the majority of tickets on these flights were sold in packages to Belarusian tour operators, while the number of tickets with Dubai as the starting point of a journey was minimal.

Belavia "has never aided and abetted the transportation of illegal migrants to the Republic of Belarus and for many years has not operated regular or charter flights to Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, and Syria," it said.

"Due to the heightened attention to this issue from some media outlets, the air carrier has tightened control on all of its flights in an effort to ensure flawless compliance with all visa requirements of the Republic of Belarus and foreign states and compliance with migration laws," the airline said.

Belavia said last week that from November 12 it halted the transportation of citizens of Iraq, Syria and Yemen departing from Turkey.
