Belarusian opposition asks OSCE to support preparations for talks with authorities

MINSK. Dec 2 (Interfax) – The Belarusian opposition has asked the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) to support preparations for talks between democratic forces and Minsk.

Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya said on Telegram she met with OSCE Parliamentary Assembly President Margareta Cederfelt, OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Secretary General Roberto Montella and the OSCE Bureau on Wednesday.

"Tikhanovskaya suggested how exactly the OSCE could use its influence as a venue uniting numerous countries… It could support preparations for talks between democratic forces and the regime, as well as to initiate debates on a Belarus crisis dialogue and to invite Russia to join in," the statement said.

In the opinion of Tikhanovskaya, Poland during the upcoming presidency "should actively contribute to the OSCE transformation into a platform mediating the national dialogue."

She asked the OSCE to appoint a special representative, who will supervise pre-talk consultations in the organization.

"The ODIHR [Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights] could also join the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe in the elaboration of a legal opinion on the constitutional reform. Last but not least, the ODIHR could assist human rights activists in their work," the statement said.

In turn, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry said on Twitter on Wednesday that Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei had met with ODIHR Director Matteo Mecacci, without providing meeting details.
