Ban on use of Russian language on territory of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy complies with language legislation – Ombudsman

KYIV. Jan 30 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The ban on the use of the Russian language on the territory of the National University Kyiv-Mohyla Academy corresponds to the language legislation, according to Commissioner for the protection of the state language Taras Kremin.

"I support this decision and believe that every university should have the best opportunities to educate truly patriotic, strong-willed, educated citizens of Ukraine. At the same time, Article 21 of the Law of Ukraine ‘On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language’ says that the language of the educational process is the state language," the press service of the Language Ombudsman quoted Kremin as saying.

According to him, the statistics of 2022 show an increase in interest in mastering the Ukrainian language, Ukrainian philology also causes interest worldwide.

It is noted that the commissioner, addressing the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Union of Rectors of Higher Education, asks to take additional measures to strictly comply with the law "On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language" in order to prevent violations that, unfortunately, take place in some universities.

"The National University Kyiv-Mohyla Academy has made quite a powerful groundwork, which, I expect, will be retransmitted in other universities of Ukraine," Kremin said.
