Ban on issuing Schengen visas to Russian citizens should become part of EU sanctions package – Stefanchuk
KYIV. Aug 12 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The ban on the issuance of Schengen visas to all citizens of the Russian Federation should become part of the next sanctions package of the European Union, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk said.
"I am convinced that the ban on issuing Schengen visas to all Russians must necessarily become part of the next sanctions package of the European Union. Such restrictions are an integral element of further increasing pressure on the Russian Federation. Every day Russia and its citizens have to pay an extremely high price for their aggression against Ukraine and the Ukrainian people," Stefanchuk said on the air of the national telethon on Friday.
He stressed that Ukraine calls not only on EU countries, but also on the whole world to close its borders and stop issuing tourist visas to Russian citizens.
The Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament thanked Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, and the Czech Republic "for very concrete actions in this direction."
Stefanchuk also advised Russian oppositionists who criticize the initiative to ban the issuance of Schengen visas to Russian citizens, "to direct all their protest energy and dissatisfaction towards the Russian authorities and their fellow citizens and, eventually, to start educational activities with carriers of Soviet and fascist ideologies."
