Azerbaijan set to increase gas exports to Europe – Aliyev

BAKU. Jan 31 (Interfax) – Azerbaijan is set to expand gas deliveries to Europe and launch cooperation in this regard with friendly countries, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said.

"It so happened that Europe is currently in need of Azerbaijan’s energy resources more than before. We are ready to increase our deliveries and, certainly, wish to begin cooperating with friendly countries," Aliyev said at a meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in an expanded format in Budapest on Monday.

Azerbaijan and Hungary signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday.

This document "will help forge long-term cooperation in the sphere of energy," Aliyev said.

The Azerbaijani president also said that Azerbaijan and Hungary "are two friends and partners," adding that new areas for cooperation between the two nations are being studied.

"We have already determined our relationship to be a strategic partnership. Today, we will sign another document to confirm the strategic nature of our cooperation. As the prime minister said, our relations have a good record already. This is a record of mutual support and trust, of partnership and friendship. This is indeed a great fortune. So currently, we are studying new spheres for our cooperation. A very solid foundation has been laid for our partnership," Aliyev said.

Energy is a part of Azerbaijan-Hungary cooperation, as the two countries are also cooperating in education and culture, he said.

"We’re hoping to see Hungarian companies engage in restoration projects in the Karabakh region. Mister Prime Minister and I have discussed these and some other issues today," he said.

Aliyev also invited Orban to visit his country ‘at his convenience’ and continue what he called the ‘active dialogue.’

Aliyev said earlier on January 19 that Azerbaijani gas exports to Europe would grow at least to 20 billion cubic meters annually by 2027. "The memorandum of understanding signed between the EU and Azerbaijan in the summer of 2022 suggests that we will double deliveries by 2027. So, the deliveries to the EU will be at least at the level of 20 billion cubic meters," he said.

"Total exports will be at 24 billion cubic meters [in 2023]," he said.

Azerbaijan began exporting gas to Europe on December 31, 2020. Presently, EU countries buying Azerbaijani gas include Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, and Romania.
