Australia's Minderoo Foundation will allocate $3 mln to FAO to buy mobile granaries for Ukraine
KYIV. Sept 8 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Australian charitable organization Minderoo Foundation will provide the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) with $3 million to buy mobile granaries for Ukrainian agricultural producers, since a significant part of the grain elevators in the country were destroyed or occupied by Russian troops, the FAO said in a press release on Thursday.
According to it, the participation of the first private organization in the FAO project will make it possible to purchase equipment for storing 264,400 tonnes of Ukrainian crops in 2022-2023.
In total, FAO plans to raise $65 million to help Ukraine as part of the ongoing Grain Storage Support Strategy. With additional funding from the Minderoo Foundation, FAO was able to raise $60.1 million to purchase and ship mobile granaries to Ukraine. Previously, the governments of Japan and Canada took part in the project.
"Vulnerable nations, such as those in Northern Africa and Central Asia, rely on crops grown in Ukraine to feed their people. The longer-term impact of our partnership with FAO will be strengthening food security at the household level in Ukraine, protecting the livelihoods of Ukrainian farmers and ensuring other dependent countries access to adequate supplies of grain, at a manageable cost," Minderoo Foundation Chairman Dr. Andrew Forrest said.
"Providing farmers with temporary granaries for storing this year’s harvest is a very important and timely decision, as part of the granaries was destroyed or damaged. One of the requirements for farmers for receiving such assistance is registration in the state agrarian register, recently launched by the ministry," said Markiyan Dmytrasevych, Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food.
The Minderoo Foundation is an Australian charitable organization founded in 2001. Its activities are aimed at curbing injustice on the planet and creating conditions for people to live in better conditions.
